Jonathan Edward Bernthal, born September 20, 1976, is an American actor known for portraying brash, hard-edged, ethically complex characters. He first rose to prominence playing Shane Walsh on AMC’s The Walking Dead from 2010 to 2012, then went on to become widely associated with Marvel’s Frank Castle / The Punisher, beginning with the character’s introduction in Daredevil’s second season in 2016 before headlining his own spin-off, The Punisher, from 2017 to 2019.

He later reprised the role in the first season of the revival series Daredevil: Born Again in 2025 and in the Disney+ special The Punisher: One Last Kill in 2026, which he also co-wrote, alongside an appearance in the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2026.

Beyond his Marvel work, Bernthal has built an extensive film career, appearing in World Trade Center (2006), Day Zero (2007), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), The Ghost Writer (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Fury (2014), Sicario (2015), The Accountant (2016), Baby Driver (2017), Ford v Ferrari (2019), King Richard (2021), Origin (2023), The Accountant 2 (2025), and The Odyssey (2026).

His television résumé also includes a prominent role in HBO’s We Own This City (2022), further cementing his reputation as a versatile, sought-after character actor.
